30 Jul Artwork: Inside Horizon
Inspired by Alex Colville’s To Prince Edward Island, 1965.
In Alex’s painting, a woman looks back at the viewer through binoculars, creating a poetic reflection between the observer and the observed.
In this work, the same idea is applied; however, the viewing box stands on its own, ready for use. The eyepieces are looking beyond the storm, into the glow of the illuminated sky, alluding to directionality.
However, the glassy-eyed box also seems to be watching as well. Here, the directionality turns. Now the observer is being observed, not by a person, but by an inanimate object, creating unease and fascination.
Overall, the scene feels like part of a story, but its narrative is deeply conceptual and lacks any clear reasoning. This opens horizons within the observer, inviting self-reflection, the poetry of its direction.
